What is it called?
· Assisted Living Facility
What services are provided?
· Assistance with activities of daily living
· Assistance with mobility
· Bowel and bladder management
· Intermittent nursing services (for residents whose needs are stable)
Who can be admitted?
· Stable and predictable medical needs
Who is inappropriate?
· Must be refused admission or evicted
o Facility is unable to safely evacuate the resident in case of emergency
o Requires 24-hour nursing supervision
o Need for assistance with activities of daily living cannot be met by the facility
o The resident cannot: express his needs, recognize danger, or respond to instructions
o The resident’s behavior interferes with the rights of others
· Exceptions
o The above conditions allow, not require, a facility to evict a resident
What training is required for direct care staff?
· How to perform direct “activities of daily living” care
· Fire safety and emergency procedures
· Response to behavior issues
· Standard precaution for infection control
· At least one staff member on each shift must be trained in first aid, CPR, and the Heimlich maneuver
Is nurse staffing required?
· Facility must employ or contract with a registered nurse to provide health care assessments, periodic monitoring, and delegation of nursing tasks
Is any public payment available?
· Yes, the Medicaid program may pay for assisted living services through a Medicaid Home and Community Based Services Waiver
