(7/25/07) Pennsylvania Governor Signs Assisted Living Law
Pennsylvania Governer signed Senate Bill 704, Printer’s No. 1272 into law on July 25,
2007. The bill was approved by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on July 14, 2007, and unanimously
approved by the Senate on July 13, 2007. The new bill defines assisted living as a separate form of long term care
under state law, and will make the state eligible for federal programs that
provide financial assistance to assisted living residents. The bill allows specific regulation by the Department of Public Welfare regarding orientation and training for caregivers, and inspection
of assisted living residences. The bill also requires assisted living residences to have an administrator who meets the
outlined qualifications and creates an Intra-Governmental Council on
Long Term Care.
