What is it called?

·        Assisted Living Facility

o       There are four possible types of facilities, Type A, B, C, or E

 

What services are provided?

·        Facility provides

o       Assistance with activities of daily living and skin care

o       Assistance with medication administration

o       Temporary services by health care professionals

·        Third-party services

o       Residents may contract to have home health services delivered

 

Who can be admitted?

·        Type A

o       Needs minimal assistance with activities of daily living

o       Able to evacuate the facility unassisted in an emergency

·        Type B

o       Incapable of evacuating a building unassisted in an emergency

o       Requires attendance during sleeping hours

o       Requires assistance in transferring to or from a wheelchair

·        Type E

o       Needs medication supervision and general supervision

 

Who is inappropriate?

·        Must be refused admission or evicted

o       Type A

·        Requires evacuation assistance in an emergency

·        Needs substantial assistance with activities of daily living

o       Type B

·        Permanently bedfast

o       Type E

·        Requires routine attendance during nighttime hours

·        Requires evacuation assistance in an emergency

·        Needs substantial assistance with activities of daily living

o       Type A, B, or C

·        Requires services of facility employees who are licensed nurses on a regular basis

·        Needs cannot be met by the facility

·        Exceptions to disqualifying eviction conditions

o       Facility may apply to the state for a waiver to avoid transferring a resident that the state has deemed inappropriately place

o       Resident can remain in facility regardless of medical condition if state receives written consent from the resident (or family member), and resident’s physician submits a written assessment indicating that  the placement is adequate

 

What training is required for direct care staff?

·        Initial training

o       Emergency and first aid procedures

o       Reporting of abuse and neglect

o       Behavior management

·        Continuing training

o       At least six hours annually covering at least behavior management

·        Additional requirements

o       Medication aides must be certified in order to administer medication

 

Is nurse staffing required?

·        A licensed nurse, either on duty or on call, must supervise a medication aide

 

Is any public payment available?

·        Yes, the Medicaid program may pay for assisted living services through a Medicaid Home and Community Based Services Waiver
