What is it called?

• The official licensure term is “Assisted Living Faciliites”

•  The term “Assisted Living Center” is used when the center serves 11 or more residents
• Assisted Living Home is the term used when the home serves 10 or fewer residents
• Each type of facility can be licensed as providing supervisory care, personal care, or directed care services
• Assisted Living Facility is a residential care institution with adult foster care that provides all three levels of care

What services are provided?

• Supervisory Care Services includes
• General supervision
• Daily awareness of resident and changing needs of resident
• Crisis intervention
• Self-administration of Medication
• Personal Care Services includes
• Assistance with daily activities (performed by non-professionals)
• Provide or coordinate intermittent nursing services
• Administration of medications and other treatments by a licensed nurse
• Directed Care Services includes
• Personal care services for people unable to recognize danger, summon assistance, express need, or make basic care decisions

Who can be admitted?

• Supervisory Care Services
• Adults who need help with daily activities that can be performed with professional skills or professional training.
• Personal Care Services
• Adults who need help with daily activities
• Adults who need intermittent nursing
• Directed Care Services
• Adults who need Personal Care Services, but cannot direct that care themselves

Who is inappropriate?

• Must be refused admission
• All Facilities
• Adults who require physical or chemical restraints
• Adults who require services the facility is not able to provide
• Adults who endanger the health and safety of others
• Personal care Services
• Adults who cannot direct their own care,
• Adults needing continuous nursing services
• Bed bound Adults, unless it is due to a short term injury or the facility has made special arrangements with the resident for their extra care
• Adults with stage 3 or 4 pressure sores; unless written authorization by a physician is obtained or the resident is under care of a home health agency or hospice agency.

What training is required for direct care staff?

• Supervisory Care Services
• Complete 20 hours of training, or the time necessary to prove competency prior to beginning work
• Certified in First Aid and CPR
• Completes 6 hours of continuing education per year
• Personal Care Services
• Complete 30 hours of training, or the time necessary to prove competency prior to beginning work
• Caregivers must also be competent in providing supervisory care services
• 50 hours total of training
• Directed Care Services
• Complete 12 hours of training prior to beginning work
• Caregivers must also be competent at providing supervisory and personal care services
• 62 hours total of training

Is there any public payment available?

• Yes; the Medicaid program may pay for assisted living services through a Home and Community Based Services Waiver
